London is to take the unprecedented step of creating Games Lanes for its road networks to ensure the 2012 Olympics runs smoothly.
In previous Olympics, notably at Atlanta, athletes have found it difficult to get to various venue on time, and with London’s famous congestion a worry, 2012 organisers have moved to create the Olympic Route Network and Paralympic Route Network (ORN/PRN).
The network will see 2.5% of London’s roads subject to measures such as changes to traffic signal timing and the creation of temporary ‘Games Lanes’.
"We have been working closely with our partners to take our operational planning to the next level, and will continue to consult with Londoners on the plans," said Olympic Delivery Authority chairman John Armitt.
"Where Games Lanes are required there will inevitably be some temporary disruption to everyday life, but we must give athletes the best chance to train and compete effectively. That means ensuring they get to their events on time and minimising the time they spend travelling."
