AECC quashes reports of closure

The Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre (AECC) has rubbished reports in the press suggesting it is facing imminent receivership.

The venue recently reduced its staff by six, but told Event that four of these were voluntary redundancies, while the other two left the company independently.

"While we can't comment on any specific details of what is a confidential report, suggestions that AECC could be facing imminent receivership are incorrect as we have a fully funded and agreed budget for the coming financial year 2010/11," said managing director Brian Horsburgh.

Speaking about a proposed loan extension for the venue Horsburgh added: "I believe it is also inaccurate to describe this proposal as a 'rescue package' or 'bail-out' as we are not asking for any additional funding, instead we are seeking a restructuring of some of the existing loans we have. I understand EICC received loans from Edinburgh Council which are repayable in 107 years time."

Elsewhere, plans for the development of a hotel at the AECC site are still underway.
